Who would have guess that this morning's v8.40 update to Fortnite Battle Royale would bring not just one, but two of our favorite features back into the fold? Not us, that's for sure! We wouldn't-a thought that even a little bit, but here we are. Today's patch also introduced more rarities for a fledgling firearm, as well as a much-needed, pets-based functionality improvement.
So! What're we so hype about? Why, none other than the X-4 Stormwing, dear reader. A brand-new, planes only LTM, "Air Royale," debuted this morning, bringing the bygone biplane back into the fold, albeit in a slightly sequestered fashion. In this duos mode, players spawn directly into a plane, and each plane has three lives. Players will continue to respawn so long as their plane is alive, but once their plane's third life is spent, the duo is eliminated. Epic has introduced new, floating treasure chests for this mode, which upgrade your held weapons permanently and temporarily increase your Stormwing's firepower, replacing your gatling gun with anything from rockets to lasers. Planes and players can be healed by flying through floating repair kits, which replace traditional health packs. And as with every Battle Royale mode, the storm slowly encroaches upon the players, but this time
it's personal the safe zone is a dome with a ceiling, which gradually lowers as the match goes on. It's pretty dang cool, if we do say so ourselves!
Meanwhile, our favorite LTM ever, Food Fight, is back with some brand-new rules to keep up with the ever-changing times. In this new "Deep Fried" variant of Food Fight, destroying the opposing team's giant mascot head does not automatically win the game, as was the case previously. Instead, the destruction of a burger and/or tomato head disables respawns for that team, and victory is achieved once the entire team is eliminated for good. Also, lava continually rises from the ground this time. Don't get cooked!
On the item side of things, the infantry rifle now has Epic and Legendary variants, which deal 42/44 base damage, respectively. They can be found in chests, supply drops, vending machines, or just lying around, and consume medium ammo. Also, since it's the holy week of Easter and everything, the rocket launcher has been reskinned into an Egg Launcher, presumably out of reverence for the glory of the resurrection, which was heavily egg-based from what we've gathered in the seasonal isle at CVS.
Last but not least, players can now pet the pets of teammates, which causes the petted pet to make some kinda cute noise and dab, or something less despicable, depending on which pet is being petted. The player that's doing the petting never really comes into contact with the pet, however -- they just quickly wave their arm, in more of a commanding gesture than a loving one. The ancient bones provided no clarification when asked if Epic would ever improve on this functionality, but for now, it's still pretty cute.
